Enhanced Rock Weathering

How ERW Removes Carbon

Natural rock weathering has regulated the Earth’s temperature throughout geological history and maintained the habitability of our planet. Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) accelerates this natural carbon removal mechanism by strategically deploying finely ground rocks in conditions that accelerate weathering.

Spread ground mineral powder on an agricultural field

Step 1

Farmers spread ground rocks on their fields

Abundant alkaline rocks like basalt are repurposed from unused fines or processed to fine powders using common mining infrastructure. The small particle size increases the relative surface area of the rocks, thereby “enhancing” the speed of their weathering by many orders of magnitude. The rock powder is then transported to agricultural fields and spread by farmers using existing equipment.

CO2 concentrations in biologically active soils can be orders of magnitude higher than in the atmosphere, making them the perfect environment for rock weathering as the higher CO2 concentrations speed up the process, while the consumption of excess acidity acid balances pH.

Alkaline rocks neutralize carbonic acid in soils

Step 2

Alkaline rocks neutralize carbonic acid in soils

Alkaline minerals react with carbonic acid (H2CO3), which naturally forms when CO2 dissolves in rainwater, in soils across the planet.

The primary weathering product is carbonate alkalinity, namely bicarbonate (HCO3-) and carbonate (CO3), which is a stable dissolved form of carbon.

Carbonate alkalinity is stored in groundwaters and the ocean

Step 3

Carbonate alkalinity is stored in groundwaters and the ocean

Rainwater transports the dissolved carbonate alkalinity away from the field, ultimately ending up in the groundwater and the ocean for long-term storage.

Measuring increased carbonate alkalinity export in the field thereby provides a direct measure of the amount of atmospheric carbon removed.
